Where does Swarm stand out vs Podia?

Built for human connection

Podia’s community is built around text posts. Swarm puts video at the center of teaching and connection, so you can show up with real presence at scale.

Courses that get completed

Swarm’s community-led learning approach pushes course completion rates by combining video teaching, peer discussion and practice submissions.

A space that feels premium

Podia has no white label and no mobile app. On Swarm’s Scale plan you get your own domain, your own colours and a branded app on your members’ home screens.

Swarm vs Podia: How are they different?

There are some feature overlaps between the two, but what’s different is what each platform focuses on:

  • Podia is a great platform for solopreneurs or small businesses who want one stop for their online business - website, products, courses and email. The result is a simple user-friendly experience whose focus isn’t on building an experience that drives engagement or connection but on having one log-in for your whole business.

  • Swarm is a video-powered community and course platform that focuses on engagement and connection. It’s all about getting members to show up, learn and support each other on their journeys. This results in communities that feel alive and connected, and courses that actually get finished - where members learn together and hold each other accountable.

Swarm vs Podia

Courses

Both Swarm and Podia support self-paces, scheduled and cohort-based courses with quizzes and certificates. The main difference is that with Swarm, there are discussion threads inside every lesson to encourage community-led learning and members can submit video homework for feedback. Podia keeps its community alongside the course rather than inside it.

Podia’s approach to courses

Podia has a streamlined and beginner-friendly approach to courses with a minimalist curriculum structure and an intuitive course-builder. Each course allows you to enroll an unlimited number of students, upload video & audio lessons, and add multiple choice quizzes.

Swarm’s approach to courses

Our focus isn’t on “selling” courses, it’s making sure they’re useful - that they get finished.

We know that peer-learning drives course completion - when members learn together, they hold each other accountable and actually complete the course. So we leveraged what we do best - community - to drive those completion rates.

Here’s how:

  • Discussion hubs built into each lesson

With Swarm you have discussion hubs built in directly into each lesson so members can post about their progress and ask questions directly inside each lesson.

For comparison, with Podia, the community sits alongside the course rather than directly inside the lessons. It may feel like a small change, but it’s the difference between members feeling like they’re going on a journey alone, with no visibility of what others experienced, and feeling like they’re learning alongside people.

  • Submit homework and receive feedback

We take it a step further by leveraging the power of video that Swarm is built on - encouraging members to apply what they’re learning. With Swarm, members can submit videos for instructor feedback or share updates on their learning journey, encouraging them to learn by taking action, and not just watching.

At the end of the day, the goal of a course isn’t to just be sold - it’s to get completed. Here at Swarm we’re dedicated to making sure that happens - completed courses and most importantly, real impact in people’s lives.

Community Features

Podia has a text-based community that works like a topic-based forum, with spaces, group chats and direct messages. Swarm was built as a community platform at its core, with video as the primary way members teach, learn and interact with each other.

Podia’s approach to community

Podia wasn’t built as a community-first platform. When it originally launched, the community feature wasn’t available - it was added later on. Podia’s community functions similar to a discussion forum or Slack channel, letting you create topic-based spaces, and communicate via group chats or 1-1 DMs.

Swarm’s approach to community

At Swarm we see community as our superpower. Our founder Gavin created Swarm to address the engagement crisis inside communities. He was tired of soulless text forums where members lurk but never really connect.

The problem with text-first communities is that text is the one thing AI can replace - so your members can’t tell if you actually took the time to write a message or a chatbot did it for you. But it doesn’t stop there. Text strips away the very things that build connection between us humans: facial expression, tone of voice, body language. Swarm was born as a video-first community platform to address that problem.

A video-first community is an online community where video is the primary way members teach, learn, and connect - not an add-on feature. But video-first doesn't mean video-only. It means using video where it matters most: to demonstrate a skill, to show up personally at scale, to let members share real progress rather than typed updates.

Live sessions & Events

Podia sells and schedules events but doesn’t host them - you can run the session on Zoom or another external tool. Swarm hosts live rooms and live streams natively inside the community, records them automatically, and publishes the recording with an AI summary and chapters.

Podia’s approach to live sessions & events

Podia manages live sessions & events by being more of a sales hub. You can sell access to your event directly from Podia and then outsource where you stream the event. Podia will handle all the sales & administrative parts including the landing page creation, ticket sales and automated reminder emails.

Swarm’s approach to live sessions & events

With Swarm you can host events natively inside your community - no external link required. If you prefer to use an external link, that’s possible as well. The difference with Podia is that the experience ends up feeling more complete and integrated - if you host the event natively, you can record the event directly inside Swarm and publish it after with an AI summary included and auto chapters. You can keep the session as part of your existing content library or sell access to it.

Monetization & storefront

Podia sells a wider catalogue: digital downloads, courses, memberships, coaching, events, bundles, plus affiliate marketing and email campaigns to drive them. Swarm sells memberships, courses, digital downloads, live events and calendar-based coaching, all designed to enhance the value of the overall community experience.

Podia’s approach

When comparing Podia’s monetization features to Swarm, Podia focuses on offering an all-in-one experience to selling while Swarm focuses on the community. With Podia, you can create individual products and sell them to your audience, whether that’s digital downloads, memberships or event tickets.

With Podia you can sell

  • Digital downloads

  • Community plans and memberships

  • Courses

  • Coaching sessions

  • Virtual and in-person events

  • Product bundles

Swarm’s approach

With Swarm, it’s less about selling different products to different audiences and more about creating products that serve the community, focusing on creating a holistic and integrated experience for your members, and offering new ways of adding value. The question isn’t “what else can I sell?”, it’s “what deepens the relationship?”.

For example, you can have a free community and then upsell them onto a high-ticket program like a mastermind. Or a paid community membership, and as part of that offer a course. Our focus is on helping you get your members to return and stay so your community feels more connected and sustainable.

With Swarm you can sell

  • Memberships: recurring or tier-based

  • Courses

  • Digital downloads

  • Lives events

  • Coaching: calendar access & bookings

Branding, mobile app & others

Podia’s superpower is its business stack. It includes a website and blog, builder, storefront, email marketing and affiliates. However, Podia does not have a mobile app, white-label or customer domain options. Swarm offers a progressive web app on every plan, which becomes a branded version on the Scale plan ($149/month), alongside custom branding colours and a custom domain.

Podia’s approach

Whilst Swarm’s superpower is community, Podia’s is its all-in-one stack. The platform has a comprehensive built-in business stack including a website and blog builder, affiliate marketing and the ability to send messages to prospective customers. However, it does not offer white labeling options or have a mobile app.

Swarm’s approach

Offering a comprehensive all-in-one business stack isn’t our focus. However, you can connect all your platforms to Swarm through our Zapier integration, including email, CRM, marketing automations and other payment formats (beyond Stripe which is what we currently use for payments & processing).

You also get a progressive web app (mobile app) included in our Scale plan (from $149/month), which takes just one tap to install - no app store or downloads needed - and works immediately on iOS, Android and desktop. You also have white-labeling options that allow you to have a custom domain and your own branding giving your members a more professional and premium experience.

When you should pick Podia

A comparison is only worth it if it’s honest so here’s what Podia does better than us, and where it’s the better choice.

  • It has built-in email marketing, website builder and blog: If you don’t want to use multiple tools for your business stack (email, website, blog etc), Podia gives you a solid solution starting from $42/month. On Swarm you would be able to assemble that from separate tools and manage integrations but if a single login for the whole business is important to you, Podia wins here.

  • If community is secondary to you: if your focus is on courses or digital products, and community is secondary, then Podia is genuinely worth considering.

  • If you don’t like being on camera and don’t plan to start: Swarm’s superpower lies in being video-first. That doesn’t mean you have to be on camera all the time but it does work best if being on camera is something you see value in.

When you should pick Swarm

  • If your teaching is visual, demonstration-based or personal: Swarm puts video at the centre of both teaching and connection, so you can show up with real human presence at scale. It’s perfect for coaches whose expertise is skills-based - like dance, fitness, music, language - or personal work like life coaching or mindset, where your presence and tone are the whole point.

  • If community is a central part to you: Swarm is first-and-foremost a community platform. If community is the central part of what you want to offer, you’ll feel the difference in how the platform is built.

  • If you want the experience to feel like yours: With Swarm you have the option of a custom domain, your colours and your logo as well as a branded mobile app. Podia doesn’t have an equivalent of this on any of their pricing tiers.
